Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Alrighty folks, I think it might be worthwhile to broach the subject of hosting a Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (SMAC) server.  All the SMAC avatars on the main forums revived my interest in the game, so I spent some time and managed to find the ISOs for both the original and expansion:

Since Kali (http://www.kali.net/) supports SMAC and simulates a LAN connection for internet games, I should be able to host a dedicated server that operates similar to Freeciv.  Now, here's the catch:  this is ALL new territory for me, so there might be some hiccups getting things rolling.  Barring that, if there are enough people interested in playing a damn good turn-based game (I'm no turn based fanboy, but SMAC was more than an acronym for me back in the day), I'll host a server.

I would LOVE to get in on this - but from what I remember Alpha really sucks multiplayer.

Maybe we were doing something wrong, but back in the day some friends and I setup a LAN SMAC game or two, and I remember being randomly assigned to a faction each time we all logged in (after shutting down the game for the night)

Otherwise, I like the idea... and I still have my original SMAC disc... and box... and manuals.

well i didnt get into the alpha or beta pos cocksuckers but im still keen, seems like a little bit of planetside mixed in. anyone in the alpha/beta have any thoughts?
